JUBILEE SPORTS MEETING.

The Jubilee sports meeting under the auspices of the Napier Tradesman's Athletic Club was held at Farndon Park yesterday. The gathering was a most enjoyable anil successful one, and the committee are to be congratulated upon the result of their efforts. The weather was all that could be desired, and the park in capital order considering the storms of the past fortnight. This fact speaks volumes for the cal'e and energy of the lessee, Mr Smith, who deserves great praise for the excellent condition of the grounds. The. committee had acted wisely in {jetting the course well staked out, including taped "ways " for the 100 yards event, and in every way the arrangements were greatly in advance of those considered sufficient for former gatherings. The train services were well designed to suit the convenience of the pnb'.ic, and as the fineness of the day tempted many to travel the result was a large attendance of spectators. The Garrison Band were present, and at intervals throughout the day played selections in the able manner for which tkey are noted, the music inducing many couples to arrange impromptu quadrille parties that were heartily enjoyed by dancers and onlookers. Visitors were well looked after in the matter of refreshments, Mr Smith having a booth on the ground, where a good trade in solids and liquids was done, and also providing a most substantial hot lnnch at the hotel. The track was a little bit heavy, but not markedly so, as is proved by the good times made in some of the events. The running all round was good, each event being keenly contested by large fields, and as the committee had sagaciously abstained from including a "walking" match in the programme, there was practically no disputing. The bagpipe competition was a bit of a surprise, as the champion was run very close, and was beaten in one event out of three by a player named M'Donald. Messrs Mills and Collins acted as judges, Mr G. I. Clarke as referee, and Sir S. E. Cooper timekeeper. The committee worked hard all day to carry out the arrangements successfully, and the secretary, Mr A. G. Howe, was literally indefatigable. Appended are the results of the events ; — GRAND JUIIILEK HANDICAP, Of £30 : the second man to receive £7, and the third £3 from the stakes. Three events, 100, 200, and 300 yards, to be decided by points ; the first nian to receive 3 points, second 2 points, and third 1 point.
