WOODVILLE.

(FROM OUE OWN CORRESPONDENT.) January 3, 1887. New Year's. Day was every tiling that could be desired as far as the weather was concerned. Early in the morning pleasureseekers were 1 on 'the move, and the township had quite a busy appearance. A number went to Palmerstqn to the sports there ; others to the picnic given by the United Methodist Free Church, or the picnic of the Presbyterians ; .and lovers of horse- racing steered for the Oringi clearing ■to enjoy themselves. There was a good • number gathered on the ground before the 'races started, but- hardly as many as might have been expected. . The club had better weather than any, previous year, ' although it proved the tfiost unfortunate meeting of the lot, taking into consideration the number of accidents, two of which were serious. In the Handicap Hurdles , tlie jockey riding Wircnails got a very had spill at the scond hurdle, the horse falling upon him and severely injuring his right knee. There was one other spill in the same race, but the jock was, not hurt. In the Club Handicap a very serious accident happened, caused by the .jockey ridiuir-IFlora being pressed to the inside, causing the horse and jockey to collide with a large piece of scantling which had been placed in the ground as a guiding post. Tho collision broke the timber clean in two, and the jockey was seen to fall, and it was found that Montague (tho jockey) had his leftleg and his collar-bone badly broken, besides being badly bruised and shaken. Dr Bran ting was on tho ground shortly after and attended the suffer, and had him - conveyed to Baddley's hotel at Danovirke, where he ! was attended to. In the Mack Hurdles > there were three spills, but no damage ' done. • The picnic of the Methodists was a great I success, one of tho great attractions being a swinging boat made by Messrs JRowntree, If ambling, and Hawkcn, which was largely 1 patronised during the day by young and '• old.
