DANEVIRKE.
(FROM OUU OWN CORRESPONDENT). ; January^, 1887. The annual meeting of the Tahoraite Jockey Club was held on the Oringi course yesterday under the influence of a glorious day. The meeting was a great success, especially to the purchasers of the gates aud the publicans' booth. The results were as follows :— Handicap Hurdle Race, — Echo Ist, Porangahau 2nd. Hack Hurdle Kace.— Wire Nails Ist. Maiden Plate.— Emmett Ist. Club Handicap.— Hard Times Ist, Barbarian 2nd. Members' Hack Race.— Penwing Ist. Pony Bace.— There , were 11 entries, out of which Lizzie M. came in iirst, Little Wonder second; and Jumbo third. Little Wonder was held, and thereby prevented from winning, and. as Lizzie 'M. was entered by the same person they were both disqualified, and Jumbo declared the winner. The person who entered these two horses comes from Napier way. He entered his horses in the name of Davidson, but afterwards his name was found to be James Burnett. This case shouldbe a warning to all, as the disqualification covers the twir horses and their. owner, and the club intends to ask the Hawke's Bay Eacing Clubs to endorse it. The Flying Handicap was the only other event, and was won by Hard Times. A mannamed Williams died on Thursday last from the effects of a. blow he received from a piece of wood while rolling a log at Mr Naunestead's saw-mill. Some of the members of the Napier Dramatic Club gave a performance here on the Ist, which was not nearly so well patronised as it deserved to be. Some people were lamenting over their losses at the races, while others were either tired of amusement or enjoying a social evening with their friends.
