Wellington, Tuesday. ' The unemployed are petitioning the Mayor to call a public meeting to consider their grievances. Owing to the heavy sea to-day, the steamer Agnes was unabje to proceed with the work of repairing the Cook Strait cable.

A preliminary inquiry into the circumstances connected with the Huia touching on some rocks in Tory Channel was held to-day. The Captain attributed the mishap to a strong current setting in, which was the cause of the vessel not answering her helm. A number of the Zealandia's immigrants are to be distributed among the country districts. Ellen Jane Gower, aged 18 months, was accidentally drowned in a stream at Stokes Valley yesterday. A man named William Cook, while bush felling at Kaitoke, was severely injured by a falling limb of a tree.

Christohurch, Tuesday. A number of gentlemen interesed in stock attended yesterday a trial at Addington sale yards of Little s Chemical preparation, recently invented for sheep dipping. The experiment was highly successful, ticks and lice being immediately destroyed. The cost of the composition amounts to £2 per thousand sheep. A resolution was proposed last night at the meeting of the City Council changing the mode of payment of the Mayoral salary from £300 per annum to any sum which might be voted from time to time. The motion was negatived.

Only one typhoid fever oase has been reported to the Board of Health sinoe the 6th of September.
