Professor Taylor and Lillie had a crowded house at the Oddfellows' Hall last evening. The graceful skating of Lillie and of tho Professor elicited loud plaudits. This evening is their last appearance in Napier. On Thursday and Friday they appear at Waipawa. Tlxe Rev. D'Arcy Irvine, in his sermon on Sunday morning at Waipawa, took a review of some of the false systems of religion, including the Mohammedan imposture, as contrasted witli Christianity. The rev. gentleman was very severe in his strictures upon the Koran, and warned liis hearers in emphatic terms against the bold and impudent Pyrrhonism of tlxe present day, which he characterised as the outcome of the grossest and coarsest ignorance. The forthcoming number of The Nineteenth Century will contain, under the title of ■■ A Modern Symposium," a discussion on tlxe " The Influence of a Decline in Religious Belief upon Morality." Six- James Stephen, Lord Selbourne, Dr. Martineaxx, Mr Frederic Harrison, the Dean of St. Paul's, tlxe Duke of Argyll, and Professor Clifford will probably take pai't in the controversy, wliich is to be continued in following numbers by Professor Tyndall and Professor Huxley. Shanks, carriage-builders, <.*" Great Queen-street, Lincolii's-inn-iields, have invented a ue.v cab, which (says The Times) they believe likely to supersede tlxe hansom now in vogue. The " Linton" as tlxis new cab is called, after Sir William's seat in Scotland, differs from the old hansom in tlxis, that everything is exactly reversed. The body of the cab is turned completely round, and the passenger sits with his 'back to the horse. Both to passenger and horse this change will, it is supposed, be found extremely beneficial. The Bishop of Chester has been taking vigorous action with respect to linking! He regards this amusement as vicious fn the extreme, and even before tho disease penetrated to Chester, he had been much exercised by its growth. At length a company started in Chester for the purpose of starting building and laying down a xink, and the Bishop's horror reached a crisis. He brought eveiy pressure to bear upon tlxe company, in order to induce shareholders to refrain from their desecration, but witliout avail. Then he resolved to make a pecuniary sacrifice, and offered to buy xip the rink in order to close it. Tlio directors asked £-1000 for the property, and the Bishop at once handed them a cheque for the amount. He will probably find tliat he has made a grand mistake, and the effect will be similar to that produced ly giving an organ-grinder a penny to go away, hundreds coming shortly afterwards for similar payment. When at last the unhappy pair were on the verge of starvation, Ricciotti determined to lay aside his incognito and declare who he was. The Government at once gave him the place of secx-etaiy in one of the public offices, which post he has now filled for a year with all honor and glory.
