CHRISTCHURCH, May 3.

A letter received here states that the Dune-din Football Club purposes sending a team on a tour round the colony this season. Shortly before eleven o'clock last night a special train , with 40 waggons of loaded grain from Ilakaia, came in contact with the gates at the racecourse. The driver, a man named Druiy, was struck on the head by splinters from the gate and killed ; Owen, outdoor inspector, who was also on the engine, narrowly escaped being killed. The train was going fast, and the gates were not seen till it was too lute to slacken speed. A searching enquiry will bo made why the gates were shut. A special meeting of the Municipal Council took place lest night to open the tenders for the construction of the Oamaru waterworks. Seventeen tenders were opened ; there were two from Christchurch, one from Melbourne, three from Dunedin, one from Wellington, and ten from Oamaru. • It was decided to refer the tenders to the engineer to report upon, and a meeting will be held on Monday evening next to consider that report, when the Council will decide as to who is the successful tenderer.
