Hawke's Bay Herald. TUESDAY MAY 24, 1870.

NATIVE INTELLIGENCE. We understand that intelligence has been received from Taupo that, on a force betug moved to the eutrauce of the bush to Ahikereru, a uumber of the Urewera (from 40 to 50) belonging to the hapu of the chief Hapurona, came out aud surrendered themselves, and have been taken to the Bay of Plenty until a decision is come to respecting them. Hapurona is well known as one of the principal chiefs of the !Urewera. He. has taken part in most of tho proceediugs against the Government. He was at Mohaka, and has lately been with Te Kooti at Taupo aud Patetere. No information eau be got froth these people of Te Kooti's whereabouts. They declare that the Urewera have left him for good, aud refuse him shelter. Beyond, believing that he is hiding at Wai-o-eka, they can give no intelligence respecting him. The remainder of the Urewera are ' at Ruatahuna, and are described as desirous of giviug themselves up, but fearful of the consequences. From the Wairoa we learu that Ropata, after capturiug some 30 prisoners iv the ranges near the Ruakiture, ran short of food ; and, hearing from his prisoners that the Wairoa natives were at Waikaremoana, destroying the settlements there, he concluded he was not wanted, and made for W.airoa. The St. Kilda was despatched on the 20th, to take him and his people home to their settlements. We understand also that the Government agent has heard; from Mr. Hamliu that the Wairoa natives at the Lake, some 300 strong, are 7 i.pj}jgood spirits, and are determined to destroy tlin Hau Hau settlements.. i<theiv before returning. The whalehpat left, at Onepoto by the Colonial forces last year, is daily seen plying on the Luke, as well as a number of canoes, leaving no doubt that the enemy iv there iv some force. ;
