WELLINGTON.
Monday, April 18. This morning, a prisoner named August .Schroeder, a seaman belonging to the ship Melita, was shot dead while employed in the hard labor gang, by the accidental discharge of the rifle of au overseer named McCarthy. The bullet passed through his heart. Schroeder was undergoing a sentence of three months for an assault on the police, and his time would expire on Saturday next. An inquest was subsequently held, at which the verdict returned was "accidental death." The formation of the new Steam Company is progressing satisfactorily. The liquidators of the old one have extended till Wednesday next the time for receiving tenders for the purchase of the plant. The Wanganui contingent had a grand war dance to-day. They go borne to-mor-row per St. Kilda and Storm Bird. Mr. Collie is recovering. lie will probably meet the merchants on Wednesday. Auckland news is to hand via Wanganui. The steamer Favorite has been lost; all hands saved. ,It is reported that Te Kooti lias been offered an asjlum and protection at Tokangamutu, by . the King, if he will keep quiet. . "
