JouENAtiSTrc— -We understand that Mr. A. Follett Halcombe, who for some years past has filled at intervals the office of Provincial Secretary and Treasurer of the Wellington Province, lias succeeded Mr. Henry Anderson as Editor of the Wellington Independent. That journal now strongly supports the present Ministry, and has recently contained some very able articles exposing the waste and mismanagement of the Stafford Ministry, especially in the Defence Department; We also observe that Mr. Charles W. Purnell, the Parliamentary reporter of the Wellington Independent, has published in the columns of that journal a poem of considerable length, in blank versre, entitled " The Search." It is a very promising and musical production. This is ndt the first time Mr. Purnell has appeared before the public as a poet • Borne months ago he published a small volume of miscellaneous poems. Resident Magistrate's Court. — Yesterday further evidence was adduced in the case Regina v. John McFarlane, for being in illegal possession of a Government revolver. The evidence was that of Serg. McFarlane,j.and yras rather of an exculpatory character, being to the effect that Col. Herrick has signed a. memo, directing Capi. Spiller, after the. weapon had been taken from defendant, to deliver it back to him; and the- Bench contented itself with ordering Mc;|Parlane to pay. the costs', amquntingiilXl '% 6& . „ /; , •"'.,' .
