THE MISCREANT PATARA.
Tins miscreant has, ifc appears, become a protegee of Mr. Parris, and walks about the streets of Taranaki in the company of that official. This has been justified by Colonel Haultain on the ground that Patara had no complicity in the murder of Mr. Volkner. Lefc the following facts testify: — Kereopa, and Patara, with their party, came to Whakatane from Taupo. - Ifc was there stated by them that their intention was to kill Mr. Volkner. Wallace, a millwright at Whakatane, hearing tbis through his daughter, sent off a messenger to Tauranga to put Mr. Volkner on his guard, in case he came by that route to Opotiki. Patara, therefore, was aware of the intention, ancl, being chief in command, could have prevented the murder. When the party arrived at Opotiki, Patara went on to Tunapahore, 15 miles distant, and, during his absence the murder took place.
