The Hawke's Bay Herald. FRIDAY, AUGUST 13, 1869.

The present Ministry, in their efforts to re-establish peace and confidence in this afflicted Colony, have gone about the work as if they meant it. The first fruit? of their straightforward course of action have alreadybeen seen in the prompt and generous manner with which Major-Gene-ral Chute complied with the desire of the Government and the Legislature — for the first time expressed in so many, words— that the 18th Regi-

ment should remain in the Colony* The Ministry, in the steps they have taken in this direction, have shewn a thorough appreciation of the position of the country, and a ! sincere determination to amend that position if man can do it. Who will say that they have not already largely restored confidence ? Instead of penning & series of" stinging memoranda to the Home Government; they have gone straight to headquarters and applied iii person to the General Commanding. That officer, thus applied to for the first time, seems to have yielded readilyenough to the application; at all events, he lost but little time in authorising Dr. Featherston to return a favorable reply. The other resolutions of „the Government, as well as one by Mr. Cracroft Wilson, have all passed the House; and we can now, for the^ first time these two years, look forward to a prospect of life and property receiving adequate protection. If this is a specimen of Avhat our contemporary calls " Ministerial Muddle," all we can say is that every man in the Northern Island who has any stake in the country will thank ministers for it.
