THE ADDRESS TO THE DUKE OF EDINBURGH.
This address was duly forwarded, and the following reply has since been received : — Mr. Superintendent and Gentlemen,— Alhough I have been unable to visit your province, I am fully convinced that had I done so I should have received as hearty and enthusiastic a welcome as has greeted me in the other provinces of ISew Zealand. For the kindly sentiments you entertain towards me, I return you my most grateful acknowledgments ; and I rejoice to receive the assurance thafc, in spite of the afflicting circumstances which have so severely tried the province you represent, the loyalty of its inhabitants remains as firm and heartfelt as ever. I sympathise most deeply with the people of- Hawke's Bay, and I sincerely hope that with tho blessing of Providence the present condition of affairs may be brought to a speedy and successful issue. Alfred. To the Superintendent and Provincial Counoil of Hawke's Bay.
