TELEGRAPHIC DESPATCHES.
WELLINGTON. The following telegram from the Defence Minister has been kindly handed to us by the General Government agent :— • May 9. Letters from Colonel Lyon of the 7th inst. (Friday last.) He had just returned from an expedition up the Patea. He has been 20 miles by land, and could get no further except by canoe. The Ngatiporous behaved admirably ; tbey killed four of the Pakakohe natives. Only one setthment was destroyed, the occupants of which retreated up the river in canoes. Ngatiporou anxious to remain and occupy the country, but wish for 70 or 80 more of their people, with their women and children, Hatiwhero wishes to go back and get them, but as tbe land is already under offer to Kemp and his people we cannot now conclude arrangements. Colonel Lyon is collecting canoes for a further search. L-BBOM OUB OWH COBEE3POHDBNX.J Monday, May 10. The Superintendent's nomination is fixed for next Monday. Dr. Featherston has issued a short address, in which he states that, after sixteen years' tenure of office, the electors will judge by the past and not by professions for the future. The old Government house is being pulled down. Dr. Featherston has gone to the native meeting at Waikane, respecting opposition to the telegraph. Colonel Lyons has returned from an expedition up the Patea river. He reports having attacked a sma,U party of Hau Haus and killed four, three men and one woman. Mr. Cowen has been elected for Wallace, vice M'Neill : another gain to the Opposition. Mr. Fitzherbert has invited his constituents to meet him. The public expect he will give a ministerial policy, but they will probably be disappointed.
