THE WAIROA EXPEDITION.
The European portion ofthe force engaged in the Wairoa expedition left Clyde a week ago. They have been engaged in establishing a strong post at Tukerangi, at the junction of the Waiau and Waikari Taheke. This post will be the depot for stores, which are to go up thus far by canoe. As soon as the redoubt is finished, the men will proceedyto make a sledge track, a distance of ten) or twelve miles, to Onepoto, on the Lake, so as to enable the transport of canoes and stores. Onepoto will be occupied, and the main force moved up there to cooperate with Colonel Whitmore on the Lake; or if he should find the main force of the enemy on the western side of the ranges, then to occupy the kaingas dn the Lake without further aid. Pontoons are being made as a further security in /case any difficulty should arise in the trat^feport of canoes. The Ngatiporou, before joining the European force, were to scbut the country to the Northwards, i.e., towards Whataroa, Papuni, and the tracks to Nuhaka and Turanga. The Nuhaka men were to keep an eye on the southern end of the Lake, and the track from its shores by way of Putahi and Putere. Colonel Herrick is probably at Onepoto at the present time. The stores sent up the river would suffice for a force of 500^, 'men foifthree weeks, and there was^-hrfge stock in Wairoa, and" more on the way. The total force under Colonel Herrick ia 220 Armed Constabulary, 110 Ngatiporou, 25 Mohaka natives, 95 militia and volunteers, besides canoe men and escort. We understand that the Hawke's Bay natives have been asked to send 100 men, but have declined.
