MEETING OF MAGISTRATES.

A meeting of Magistrates, convened to take into consideration the present critical state of affairs on the East Coast, was held on Saturday last, in the Council Chamber. After some deliberation, the following resolution was passed : — We, the undersigned Justices of the Peace residents in the.province of Hawke's Bay, beg most respectfully to represent to your Excellency that we consider this part of the island to be in such a critical Eosition, from the menacing attitude of ostile tribes, as to require the most grave, serious, and immediate consideration. Recent intelligence from the interior points to the probability of a general rising of disaffected tribes ; hostilities have takea place on the East Coast, spreading to the Bay of Plenty and the vicinity of Taupo j. the outsettlements of this district are exposed to imminent dagger- and no effi-" cient means that we are aware of arebeing taken for its defence. The calamitous events that have transpired both on the East and West Coast, of this island sufficiently justify us in. making an appeal to your Excellency to forthwith convene the General Assembly,, in order ihat measures may he adopted. and precautions taken for the better security of life and property.
