WAIROA.
I PBOM OUE OWB- CORBESPONDENT. | Clyde, August 21, 1868. Time is so pressing that I must defer to your next issue any lengthened description of the state of affairs in our district. News reached us at a late hour last night that the Hauhaus still maintained their position at Puketapu — that they had sent out parties of considerable strength, and had made a descent as far as Erepeti; that they had carried away Wi Tapuna and his few followers, and that they had been joined by Himiona. There is also a certainty that they will receive large accessions from Wairoa and Turanga, so long as they continue in the neighborhood. The information received ia of such a character that Major Fraser has himself proceeded to Napier in the Waipara, leaving the Constabulary here under command of Captain Richardson. Late in the day as it is to hope for anything of the kind, it is yet possible that wise counsels may 'prevail, and that the Government will pause before, they commit the insane step of withdrawing all the forces from Wairoa. I promise you a full and detailed account of the real position of affairs for your next issue. The wounded have been sent to Napier : they are progressing favorably. I notice one of the most incomprehensible statements in a recent "Extra" of yours, to the effect that the enemy were making for the Tarawera gorge, and threatened the. Napier district. Upon what possible foundation such a statement could be made, I am at a loss to conceive. Such an undertaking under present circumstances would be little short of a physical impossibility. There is as little relative connection between the two places, Tarawera and. Te Papuni, as there is between the Cove of Cork and the Isthmus of Panama. Such baseless state-' ments are mischievous in the extreme.
