Local Intelligence.
A painftjl interest was excited during last week on its becoming known that Mr. T. E. King, for some years in the establishment of the Union Bank here, had been suspended on account of defalcations to a considerable extent having been brought to light. Mr. King was universally esteemed, and the shock to the public mind was all the greater in consequence, We refrained from noticing,. in our last, this very distressing affair, as inquiry was then pending. The matter, however, has now been made fully public through the apprehension of Mr. King upon the serious charge of having forged the signature of one Henry Hartshorn to a cheque upon the bank. The' arrest occurred on Saturday last, and the exaamination will take place to day. Hfs Honor the Superintendent, accompanied by Mr. M. Fitgerald and Mr. J. Grindell, left yesterday by the Lady Bird for the Wairoa. It is understood that a purchase of land suitable for European settlement has been effected by Mr, McLean, or at least that negociations for the same are in an advanced state ; but particulars have not yet been made public.
