Local Intelligence.

Mr. Bookman's disappearance. — Mr. LaSerre returned on Saturday evening from Waipuna without having been able to discover any trace of the missing gentleman. Scarcely a doubt now remains that he has perished miserably in the fern or the bush.

Militia. — The time for enrolment on the militia list has now some days expired, and a good many, we learn, have neglected to enrol their names as required by law. The penalty for such omission is £5. We believe that persons have yet an opportunity of enrolling, but we would recommend promptitude in so doing.

The Audit Act. — To meet a wish expressed by several of our readers, we re-publish in full the Provincial Audit Act. We learn that a good many persons are in the field for the situation of Auditor, to be appointed under its provisions. In this case the appointment rests with the members of the Council.

A MAN SUPPOSED TO BE KILLED BY wild cattle. — Messrs. Carroll and Campbell, who arrived overland from Wairoa yesterday afternoon, report the following occurrence. A European, name unknown but conjectured to be Miles Hudson, Mr. Dolbel's overseer, was riding last Friday in the neighbourhood of Waikare in company with two Natives, going to Mr. Allen's place. He lagged behind, his horse being tired, and the Natives went on. Immediately afterwards, on looking back, they saw him attacked by one out of a mob of wild cattle. On hastening up they saw the horse embowelled by the furious animal, and the rider trying to escape on foot to the shelter of a bush. He was overtaken, however, before he reached it ? tossed into the air, and then gored while on the ground. The Natives, believing him to be dead, and being afraid of being also attacked, then went off. On Saturday Messrs. Allen and Curtis went out in search of the body, but had not returned when our informants left.
