— o— WOKONGI- OP SURVEY DEPARTMENT. Report oe Select Committee, bbottght to Maroh 16. Your Committee, after duly investigating tho subject referred to them, report : — ' 1. That in their opinion the services of the |$nly officer of the Department who has been in the service during the past 12 months, and who is now in Provincial employment, have been satisfactorily performed. f 2. In reference to contracts, the Committee'
would advise that in all future cases the strict letter of agreement contained in such contract , should be adhered to and carried out, and that in no case should payment be made when such is not the case. 3. As to the separation of the offices of Commissioner of Crown Lands and Chief Provincial Surveyor, the Committee is of opinion that such is necessary for the public interests ; and that, although the Province will be put to additional expenses, they feel that the grounds set forth in the reply of the officer at present holding those appointments, and a further consideration that, under the present system, the duties and interests of the most important department of the Province must to a certain extent be neglected, fully justify them in recommending it. J. D. ORMOND, Chairman.
