WELLINGTON.
By the 'Sea Serpent,' our files extend to the 11th inst. - . . :
The 'Independent' has" discovered that the Council, lacking the two Ahuriri members, is now an illegally constituted body, and that its functions must of necessity cease until another meeting of the General Assembly. The 'Spectator' characterizes this as a pitiful pretext to gain time.
We observe an assertion in the 'Wanganui Chronicle' to the effect that, in a pecuniary point of view, Wellington will gain by the separation of Ahuriri. Yet in the article in the 'Independent' to which we. have just referred, the editor fervently hopes that the Imperial Government will disallow the New Provinces Act !
The movement on the part of Atfcldand to be created a separate colony is alreadyleading to- agitation on the part of the southern towns for the pre-eminence of being the futui-e seat of government. The 'Nelson Examiner' is warm in support of the claims of Nelson, while the ton papers are loud in asserting the superiority of Port Nicholson. Not improbably the agitation may extend to Canterbury, ths capital of which, geographically speaking, will be the most central part of the remaining portion of the colony, should the wishes of Auckland be acceded to.
The absolute necessity of having a deep water wharf in Wellington harbour is being felt by the mercantile community, a meeting of the Chamber of Commerce having been specially covened to consider the matter.
On the 7th and Bth inst., the hull, rigging, spars, stores, &c, of the ship 'Oliver Lang' were brought to the hammer. The hull brought £600, the purchasers being Messrs. W. Bowler, Son & Co.
The Wellington papers, strange to say, are at perfect harmony on one subject — the mystery attending the Ccleman contract ; and express a wish that a copy of it should appear in the 'Government Gazette.'
