The following letter has been handed us for publication by Joseph Rhodes Esq., which we have much pleasure in doing. We have read this document carefully over, but cannot, gather from its tenor that the original communication was of such a character as to render it necessary that its contents should, even to this day, be studiously withheld from the public. Indeed, we are free to confess — at the risk of being again charged with seeking to create dissension — that v.c feel thoroughly ashamed of this stupid affectation of mystery on thepart of the provisional committee. Superintendent's Office, Wellington, Oct. 22, 1858. Sir, — I have the honour to acknowledge your letter of the Ist inst., addressed to me by you in your capacity of "Chairman of the Committee of Management appointed by the meeting of electorsheld on the 20th September, at Napier," in which you request to be informed of all matters territorial or financial that immediately affect ths tvvoprovinces of Wellington and Ahuriri ; and at Iho same time assure the Government of Wellington, that the Committee does not contemplate any interruption to the social, friendly, and commercial intercourse at present existing. I am desired, specially, by the members of tho Wellington Government- to assure you and. the people of Ahuriri that they entertain towards them none other but cordial good will, not merely socially, but also politically. At the snnte time, in reference to the information required, I must be permitted to observe that ■with every disposition to inform the Committee,, the Government, of Wellington cannot constitutionally recognise any governmental authority until such shall have been regularly established. Until then, however, the people of Ahariri may rest assured' that there will be no sudden, suspension of any of the Public Works now .in progress, and in the interim this Government will be happy to receive' any practical suggestions that the settlers may have to offer, either through you or any other channel. I have, &c, William Pitzherbebt, Deputy Superintendents Joseph Rhodes, Esq., Chairman, &c, Committee.
