Inquest at Waiptjiojh.au. — On the 21st July last, at Waipukurau, an inquest was held before George Worgan Esq., coroner for that distiict, and a jury, upon the body of Maria, wife of Hori Nia Nia. The deceased, it appeared in evidence, had been riding in company with her husband and others, when she was thrown violently from her horse and dragged by the stiirup iron about, 100 yards. Injuries resulted, the deceased having been in an advanced stage of pregnancy, which caused her death in an hour afterwards. The .party had obtained some liquor at Waipawa, from a shepherd who bought 2 gallons at the store there, but the evidence failed to connect this with the unfortunate accident that followed. The jury returned a verdict of "accidental death." New Province. — A fine entire horse, brought from Auckland in the "Dolphin" by J. B. Ferguson Esq., and thus named by him in honour of the recent change in our political prospects, was landed in safety and fine condition on Thursday morning. We trust that, in this effort to improve the bone and muscle of our horse stock, Mr. Ferguson will prove more fortunate than in his last speculation of a similar nature. Inquest. — An inquest was held on Wednesday last, at the Settler's Hotel, before T. Hitchings Esq., coroner, & a jury, upon the body of Stephen Sheldon, then and there lying dead. The deceased, who was well known throughout the district, and who was latterly shepherding for G. Imrie Esq., had been for some days. at the Port, drinking hard. Delirium tremens ensued, and the deceased, when in this state, is supposed to have drowned himself in the surf — his body having been found on the beach in a state of nudity. The jury returned a verdict in accordance with the circumstances. J. B. Ferguson Esq., M.H.R., returned to the District by the "Dolphin," the recognised member for the County of Hawke. The representation for the Wairarapa District has been, of course, declared vacant.
