Lajtentabxe Death by Drowning.— On Wednesday last a man named Charles Collier, well known about this port, lost his life under the following circumstances : — He was in charge of a punt that was being brought by the "Gem" from Wairoa, for Capt. Sturley. The punt was being towed astern, and Collier in it for the purpose of steering it. When the "Gem" arrived off the Old Man's Bluff, the wind, which had been light, freshened up into a strong breeze. Some miles nearer Napier, just after dark, a sea struck the punt, which caused her to broach to and snap the painter ; at the same time the steer oar must have knocked Collier overboard, for he was seen for a moment in the water, and heard to cry "oh ! oh !" Sail was immediately shortened and the schooner hauled on the wind, so as, as nearly as could be judged, to retrace the ground they had passed over, but nothing could be seen either of the unfortunate ma-n or of the punt. The latter was picked up by the steamer on Thursday afternoon, bey oiid-Ah'uriri, Bluff, and brought back to port. Photography. — The arrival amongst us of a photographic artist is quite an event in the history of our infant township. It will be seen from, our advertising columns that Mr. J. N. Crombie, to whose excellence as an artist we can speak from personal knowledge, and who has just returned from a successful professional visit to the southern provinces, — has arrived in Napier by the Wonga Wonga. His stay will be a very brief one — only till the return of the steamer ; and it is scarcely necessary to remind our readers that such an opportunity does not present itself every day. The Escaped Peisonee. — On Thursday afternoon, much to the relief of our quiet townsfolk, the desperado Wood was safely shipped by the steamer for Wellington. He was escorted to the vessel by Corporal Groom, of the police ; and to his destination by Corporal Connor, of the 65th, the claimant of the £100 reward.
