Steam Traction on Common Roads, &c. — Another of the triumphs of steam haa just been made by one of Boydell's traction engines, which has brought from London to i Thetford, along tne common road, a load of seventeen tons ; travelling at the rate of about three and a half miles per hour, and consuming from one half to three quarters, cwt. of coals in that time. The previous; week the engine was ploughing land at the rate of an. acre and a half per hour, and this, week it is carting as above, thus proving that horses may be superseeded to a great extent in agriculture. — Engineer. The Leading Article. — Mr. Macau--lay tells us that what is now called the leading article in a newspaper seldom appeared, even after the censorship of the press, expired in 1695, unless there was a want of news J "When there was a scarcity, of intelligence, when the Dutch mails were:detained by die west wind, when the rapparees were quiet in the Bog of Allen, when, no stage-coach had been stopped by highwaymen, when no nonjuring congregation had been dispersed by constables, when no ambassador had made his entry with a long train of coaches-and-six, when no lord or poet bed been buried in the Abbeyf^afcd when consequently it was difficult to fill up four scanty pages," then the editor supplied a leading, article.
