RACEHORSE DOPED?

Condition of N.Z. Cup Favourite Causes Police Inquiry VETERINARIAN’S DISCOVERY CALIENTE’S CONDITION

(By Telegraph —Press Association). CHRISTCHURCH, To-day. Evidence that “dope” had administered to Caliente, the New Zealand Cup favourite, Avas discovered Avhen a veterinarian, examined her for soreness. The inare ivas frothing at the mouth and showed signs of a burnt throat. The police are investigating. Caliente is a six-year-old chestnut mare oAvned by Mr J. L. Webb, of Auckland, and trained by. R. S- Uagby at Takanini. She had shown only useful form until last month, when she sprang into prominence by winning the Mitchelsen Cup at E! ersiie from a first-class field, establishing a race record. She immediately advanced to become the ruling fn\ourite for the Noav Zealand Cup, but raced rather disappointingly at Trentham on Labour Day and lost many of her admirers. Taken on to Riccarton she shoAved absolutely none ot her usual dash in recent gallops, and has gone right out of favour. It was apparent by these efforts that she was not her usual self, hut it was generally supposed that she had trained off. Caliente is a particularly handsome dark chestnut by Polazel from Fortune’s Wheel, avlio is a half sister to Phar Lap. Caliente rather resembles the “Red Terror,” judging by photographs of the latter.
