WAR OFFICE’S ACT

SPECIAL LEAVE ALLOWED

CONSIDERATION FOR V.C.

LONDON, Oct. 28

That there is a human side to the War Office is revealed by an announcement that Lance-Corporal Findlajer will rejoin the Cordon Highlanders at Gibraltar after special leave. Thirty-seven years ago, when the Gordons stormed the Dargai Heights in Afghanistan, Piper Findlater, the lance-corporal’s father, finding the regiment held up by deadly fire, ran ahead, playing the bagpipes, and when wounded in both ankles scrambled to Jus knees and rallied the Gordons to a victorious charge by playing “Cock o’ the North.” For this he was awarded the Victoria Cross.

Six weeks ago lie fell, breaking a leg, while working on his croft, whereupon he successfully applied for six weeks’ leave for his son to enable him to attend the potato crop.
