VIOLENCE FEARED
WINDWARD ISLANDS STRIKE. MILITARY CALLED OUT. (United Press Association —By Electric Telegraph Copyright). CASTRIES ST. LUCIA, Nov. 5. For the second time in a fortnight Sir Selwvn Grier, Governor of the Windward Islands, to-day proclaimed a state of emergency in one of his colonies. Following a stevedore strike, which began on Monday and continued through Tuesday, Sir Selwyn announced that the colony was in a state of emergency and called out the island’s volunteer force for actual military service.
There has been no sign of a disturbance, though more than 100 labourers struck on Monday for higher wages for unloading the collier Tasmania, but it is apparent that the Governor feared an outbreak of violence such as the one at Kingstown (St. Vincent) last month.
The streets have been patrolled for more than 24 hours by extra armed police and a small detachment of marines from H.M.S. Challenger -which has been in port since Sunday. The trouble at St. Vincent was the result of a strike of plantation work-
