WHY NEPIA TURNED TO LEAGUE
WANTS FINANCE FOR FARM SIGNING ON FEE OF £SOO (By Telegraph—Press Association). GISBORNE, Nov. 6. Mr Georgo Nepia, famous Maori All Black, will leave Gisborne to-morrow for Auckland, where lie will join the Akaroa for England under a two years’ engagement with the newlyformed London Rugby League Club, Streatliam-Mitcham. He will receive a signing on feo of £SOO, expenses both ways and a wage of at least £3 10s a week.
Mr Nepia emphasised that he Lad no complaint against the Rugby Union and found the change ever very hard as he had always regarded it as sacred. He realised he owed his present position to the Union ci.de. However, he required finance for his farm and this seemed the only possible source.
“I do not think my Rugby Union friends will begrudge me deciding to put my last years of football to the best advantage for my cwn benefit.” he added.
Playing for the same club will be Charlie Smith (Wairoa), McDonald (Marlborough) and George Harris-on (Taranaki), also members of the last Maori team to tour Australia.
