District Club Events
The official opening of the Eltham Croquet Club took place under pleasant weather conditions last week. The president (Mrs H. Gubb) extended a cordial welcome to new members and Visitors and especially members who had rejoined. An apology for absence was received from Lady Carlicross, who wished the club a* successful season. An apology also was received from Mrs J. Arthur. The president expressed regret that so many of the best players had left the district, but she trusted the remaining members would enjoy the season. Mrs I. J. Bridger (Mayoress) played the first bowl and declared the green open for play. Afternoon tea was served by the members, and at the conclusion the president, on behalf of croquet friends, presented Mrs J. D. McKay, a foundation member of the club, with a leather handbag. In her remarks the president said that Mrs McKay had been looked upon as the chib’s guiding star and they wished to show tlio esteem in which she was held. In reply, Mrs McKay said the members had surprised her, and she felt keenly her leaving the district. Visitors present included Mrs C. A. Cooper (New Plymouth), Mesdames Hollis, Ward, Williams, Shearer, Edwards (Okaiawa), Mesdames Alger, Jenkin, Burton, Clark, Allen (Avon), Mesdames Carlson, Phillips and Hammond (Mangatoki). Mrs Williams, on behalf of the visitors, thanked the president and members for their hospitality. Prizes were won by Mesdames Bridger, Ward and Fleming (target croquet), Mesdames Williams, Harvey, Bluett (golf), Mesdames Jenkin, Ware, S. Park Notes
Although the weather this week has not been at all favourable, the Park club has had several enjoyable afternoons. The first Friday in the month i is to be devoted to progressive croquet and last Friday tne first club day of the new season, there 'was a good attendance. In the A. silver button competition the winner was Mrs Chadwick and in the B competition Mrs O’Brien was the most successful player. The first Monday in each month is to he observed as honorary members’ day and last Monday thprej was an attendance of 30 and 18 took part in golf croquet, the highest score being that of Mrs H. F-. Cressey, who will be the holder of the silver button for most points. The club has a gold button for competition and in the draw to commence the season Mrs J. W. Harding became the first holder and in the first game Mrs Harding was defeated by Mrs Murdock.
To-morrow handicap games will he played by A and B grade players.
Hawera Club
Members of the Hawera club commenced the first of their competitions ori Tuesday, when play for the Collins Ferns resulted in a win for Mrs J. Syme and Miss Johnstone. The Dingle Buttons (for A and B grade players on handicap) and the Dowling Buttons (break competition) will be played to-morrow for the first time this season.
