Madame Stavisky Charged With Receiving Funds From Swindles CHAIRS THROWN ACROSS ROOM LAWYERS COMMENCE DANCING (United Press Association —By Electric Telegraph Copyright). Received noon to-day. PARIS, Nov. 5.. Clad in deep black, Madams .Stavisky, slightly disdainful, faced the judge at the Seine Assizes, charged with X’oceiving part of the proceeds of her dead husband’s "'alleged 417,000,000 swindles. Twenty of Stavisky’s associates were also charged with participating in the frauds. Wild scenes occurred in the courtroom, which was crowded by 50 defending counsel,. 270 witnesses and Republican guards. When the judge, M. Barnaud, asked if defending counsel were comfortable there was a noisy demand for chairs. In the confusion M. Barixaxxd suspended the session and retired, while chairs were thrown .across the room and lawyers danced excitedly. Witnesses, prisoners, newspapermen and spectators leap from their seats and joined in, laughing and shouting. Madame Stavisky is already confident of her acquittal and is lxiaking plans to go on the stage. It. is expected that the duration of the trial will exceed a month.
