REPUBLIC NOT WANTED
Britain Regarded as South Africa’s Staunchest Friend GENERAL HERTZOG’S VIEWS MOVE AT PARTY CONGRESS (United Press Association —By Electric Telegraph Copyright.) BLOEMFONTEIN, Sept. 11. “Those wanting a republic will find rue strongest of opponents,” declaied General Hertzog at the Free State United Party’s congress. South Africa needed friends to maintain her position in the world. Nov tliov were being asked, to deal a death blow to Britain, their staunchest friend. There was a time when South Africa was prepared to get rid of the British fleet but the position was different today. If South Africa forsook her friends or sent them away she must look to her iown defence because even England was not now bound to come to. her aid. . They must be united or lose their independence. Hie mover of a motion calling for a republic withdrew it. Good had been done by getting such a clear and acceptable exposition of General Hertzog’s attitude.
