District News Miss Jean Hughes, who has been spending an extended holiday in Tauranga with relatives, has returned to her home on Oeo Road. Miss F. Bailey has returned from a holiday visit to Gisborne. Mrs Edgar Pepperell has returned from Wanganui. Mrs Southey and Miss J. Southey, formerly of Awatuna, have been the guests of Mrs W„ Walker, Auroa Road. Miss Sterry is the guest of Mrs W. A. Lind. Mrs W. Anderson has returned home from hospital. Mrs Scott, formerly of Rawhitiroa, is now residing at Awatuna. Mr W. R>. Boyd and son, Mr M. Boyd, have returned from a visit to Hastings. The Auroa basketball team played a match last Saturday against the JEI- - girls and won by 12 goals to six. The referees were Mrs Knuckey and Mr Fairbrother. Auroa goals were scored by Misses A. O’Dea (2), J. Lee (5) and Vera Bushin (5). The Auroa girls served afternoon tea for which they were thanked by the captain of ihe Eltham club. Miss Myra Kirk (vice-captain) replied. Mrs A. T. West is visiting relatives at Tariki and New Plymouth. The Awatuna Girls’ Basketball Club held a social and dance last Fi’iday in the Awatuna Hall, when a very enjoyable evening was spent to rjaise i funds for the team. There was a
Vsplendid attendance and the funds will 'benefit greatly. Items were rendered by Airs Scott (songs), Air W. R. Boyd (songs). Miss G. Hughes (steel guitar) and Air J. Duckett (recitations). Aliss Carmichael .was accompaniste. Prizes for euchre were won by Airs R. Symes and Air B. Davison. Music for dancing was supplied by Air and Miss Collins, while extras were played by Airs L. D. Nicholls and Airs Edgar Pepperell. The duties of M.C. were carried out by Air Roy Pepperell and Air B. AVatson. A children’s Alonte Carlo was won by Roy Bankbead and Josephine Bourke. A statue waltz was won by Miss F. Bailey and Air Roy Corbett and a Monte Carlo ■by Aliss AI. Coxhead and Air (P. Coxhead. A competition was won by Airs J. Hartley. On behalf of the basketball club. Air Kruse thanked all those who had helped to make the evening a success. Last Saturday afternoon, in the Awatuna School grounds, a match was played between Awatuna and Kapflnga Convent basketball teams, when Awatuna won by eight goals to five. The referee was Sister Borgia. After the match the Awatuna girls entertained the Kaponga visitors to afternoon tea in the hall, and there were also a large number of residents present. The Kaponga captain, Aliss Kehely, thanked the home team for their hospitality and the Awatuna captain, Aliss O. Phillips, responded.
