PATEA FIRE BRIGADE

ANNUAL SMOKE CONCERT. ; SERVICE STAR PRESENTED. (From Our Own Correspondent). A smoko concert was held by members of the Patea Volunteer Fire Brigade in the supper room of the Patea Town Hall on Wednesday night last, when Lieutenant G. Willis was presented with the much coveted 25 years’ service gold star. There were 120 visting firemen and citizens present. Apologies for absence were received from the Mayor of Patea (Mr F. Ramsbottom), Messrs. A. T. Christensen, Herbert, D. Ansley, C. Beauchamp, G. Taylor, J. Back, N. Hamerton, the Elt-ham Brigade, Captain Watts, secretary of the United Fire Brigades’ Association, secretary Warner (Hawera), Tiner, vice-president of the T.D.W.F.B. Association. In the absence of the Mayor, Mr F. Nai smith made the presentation to Lieutenant Willis and in a brief speech outlined his career as a fireman. Captain Fitzwater, on behalf of the members of the Patea Brigade, then presented Lieutenant Willis with a gold mounted fountain, pen. The following toasts were honoured • “The King,” proposed by Captain Fitzwater; “Our Guest,” Mr E. Thompson ; “Now Zealand and 3 aranaki United Fire Brigades’ Associations,” ex-Captain L. T. Adams; “Gold Star Men’” the Rev. W. H. Walton; “Patea Fire Brigade,” Mr E. F. Hemingway; “Visiting Brigadesmen.” Fireman C. Carey; “Local Bodies,” exCaptain W. C. Glenny; “Kindred Societies,” Dll’ L. P. Clark; “The Ladies,” Mr W. Lamb; “The Artists,” and “The Press.” During the evening items were given by Messrs. J. Crawford, J. Haworth, E. Fitzwater, R. Willis, W. McClusky and Secretary P. Aitken (Stratford). The following gold star men have served continuously in the Patea brn gade: Ex-Captain F. Spooner (33 years), ex-Captain M. Carey (33 years),

ex-Captain L. T. Adams (26 years), exOaptain W. Glenny (26 years), ex-Fire-man C. Adams (26 years), Fireman E. Nelson (29 years), Fireman C. Carey (27 years) and Lieutenant G. Willis (25 years), a grand total of 225 years.
