HAWERA MAIN SCHOOL

meeting of the committee WATER CONSUMPTION PROBLEM A SPEEDING MOTORIST.

A full attendance of members of the Hawera Main School Committee was recorded at the monthly meeting held last evening. Dr. W. M. Thomson presided and the members present were Messrfc. H. Ackroyd, H. Baker, I, J. Hall,. G. C. Harris, A. Jackson, J. D. Tait, E. J. Yearbury and H. Collier (secretary). Mr J. W. Thomas, headmaster, was also in attendance. The matter of unusual consumption of water at the infant school was discussed bv members, it being considered that either the meter was recording incorrectly or that some considerable leakage was taking place. It was decided to again approach the Hawera Borough Council with a view to ascertaining if the meter was cor-, rectly recording the volume of water passing through the pipes and that the secretary be instructed to then make urgent representation to the Taranaki Education Board for an immediate inspection of the supply pipes. In tliis connection the caretaker reported that there were no leaking taps or cisterns which would occasion such consumption and it was felt by numbers that the matter was serious and most urgent. A letter was received from the “ITawera Star” offering to present a reproduction print of their Majesties King George and Queen Mary to be hung in a prominent place in the school, should the committee so desire, as a reminder of the silver jubilee ot the accession to the throne. .It was unanimously decided to gratefully accept the gift and the matter of framing and hanging the pictures in a suitable place was left in the hands of the headmaster and Mr Ackroyd. The secretary of the school diamond jubilee committee wrote asking that the school committee undertake the, , disposal of badges in. connection with i the forthcoming jubilee. It was de- ! cided to accede to the request. I The report ot the headmaster show-j led that, at the commencement of the ! present term, twenty-four children: had i been admitted and fifteen withdrawn. The -roll number at present stood at 1520 while the average attendance to, [date since the beginning of the term is 472. Since the beginning of the ‘year 100 children had been admitted and 113 withdrawn. These figures included those children who had passed ! the sixth standard at the end of last jvear. Sovontv-three teachers attended I the special course of physical education on May 31 and June 1. Mr K. C Reid, instructor at the Auckland Training College, had charge of the classes anti much useful information , was imparted. I The report continued that the cml- ; dren appeared more settled in their (.work this term and better progress ' was being made. Miss S. Pickett had resigned in view of her approaching marriage, and an--1 other teacher would be appointed in j her place. Miss Pickett hacl done very •capable and conscientious work during j her period at the school. i fn the matter of sport, the report 1 continued, it was pleasing to record | that the Hawera school team had been j successful in winning the Yarrow Cup in the football tournament at Manaia ■ on June 3, when 18 teams competed. The swimming certificates won last • year were presented by Mr R. M- Ricki ard who gave a most interesting and I valuable address on the necessity for ! every child to learn to swim efficiently, j A glaring case of reckless driving ion the part of a motorist who passed ! the school gates at a speed variously : estimated at 50 miles per hour on one day of this week and at a time when 'the children were being released for j lunch was reported. It was stated ; that the number of the ear had been secured and it was decided to refer the matter to the Automobile Association for identification with a view to preventing a recurrence of the happening. “The planting out of seedling trees grown in the school gardens came before the committee and it was decided to set aside a portion of the ground 1 at tlie hack of the infant school for the purpose. _ Accounts amounting to £2B Os <d were passed for payment.
