It is rumoured that . a gentleman largely interested in meat preserving works, who is now on a visit to the district, has expressed his willingness to make an offer to the Patea company for their works, and to put £2OOO or £3OOO of his own capital into the business, provided that a few of the leading settlers would support the movement and subscribe a further £4OOO or £oOOO. * * * * *
A pedestrian named McKenzie was credited with accomplishing the following performance at* Seghill on March 1 within an hour: Walking 4.’ miles, picking up 20 stones a yard apart, walking backwards 100 yards, wheeling a barrow 100 yards, carrying a 70lb weight in each band JOO yards, carrying an SOJb. weight on his back 100 yards, picking up 10 potatoes a yard apart with his mouth, hopping 100 yards, carrying an egg 100 yards in a teaspoon, jumping in a sack 100 yards, running 100 yards, rolling a barrel ICO yards, drinking a gill of beer through a pipe shank. The walking occupied 34min. 20sec., the stone picking 3min.. walking backwards 28sec., liopping 40sec., egg and spoon performance oOsec., and the whole 13 were accomplished in 55min. 3Ssec. ***** Earthquakes in the province of Kashmir still continue with great- severity, says a Bombay cable. -Great damage to property has taken place, and many houses have been swallowed up by fissures in the earth. * * * * * The death is announced from London of Sir Julius Benedict, the eminent musical composer.
