BRITAIN’S COMMITMENT
Would Aid France in Event of Violation of Treaty
ACTION AGAINST GERMANY STANDING BY OBLIGATIONS (British Official Wireless.) Received 1.45 p.m. to-day. RUGBY, May 7. Asked in the House of Common/-; today whether in the event of any alteration. by Germany in. the demilitarised zone under the Treaty of A orsailles it was to be understood that Britain would immediately go to the assistance of France with the whole of her armed forces under the Treaty of Locarno, tlie Foreign Secretary, Sir John Simon, said the circumstances in which the British guarantee under the Treaty of Locarno would operate were specified in that treaty itself. As stated in the Anglo-ltalian declaration embodied in the resolution of the Strosa. conference, the British Government would stand by all, their obligations -under- the. Treaty: of- Locarno and intended, should-the need arise, to fulfil them. The Prime Minister, Mr Ramsay MacDonald, replying to another question, said the Government was very anxious to put the House and the country in possession of all available information in regard to Germany’s air development. This could not, however, be conveniently done in the form of a White Paper, as a full statement as possible would be made early in the forthcoming debate.
