MOTOR RACING AT MURIWAI
SMALL MACHINE IN FLAMES
HIGH SPEEDS ATTAINED. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) AUCKLAND, May o. High speeds were attained at the motor-car races held by the New Zealand Motor Racing Drivers’ Association at Muriwai Beach on Saturday afternoon. An added thrill was provided for spectators when a tiny single-seater supercharged'Austin burst into flames in the New Zealand beach championship. The driver, G. Smith, escaped injury, and the flames subsided after the car had been damaged to some extent.
The mishap to the Austin, which was leading at the time, resolved tho contest, into a race /between a redesigned .single-seater Mercedes Benz, owned by Lieutenant H. R. A. Kidston and R. A. Dexter, jun.’s Brooklands Riley, also recently fitted with a single-seater bodv.
