MARGIN OF 33 POINTS STRATFORD DEFEATS PATEA FRIENDLY MATCH PLAYED
In a friendly match aT Victoria Park, Stratford, on Saturday, tho Stratford Seniors heat Patoa pointless, scoring 33 to the visitors’ nil. Paten was outclassed in all departments, being unable to get away from the driving forces of the Stratford, team, all of whom displayed exceptional dash and ability. Against the wind in the first spell, Stratford scored three tries, of which two were converted, while in the second spell they notched six tries of which one was converted. The teams were:— Pa tea (blue): Taylor, Milliken, Edwards, Rowlands, I). Hunt, Cameron, Zimmerman, Bourke, Johnson, Baldwin, Woodford, Thomson, E. Hunt, Couch, Roberts. Stratford (red and black): Berg,
Richards, Ross, R. Taylor, P. Collins, G. Sangster, C. Songster, Hinton, Latham, Davy, Young, R. Clarke, Smith, Butcher, Foster. Patoa had tho bonolit in tho first spoil of tho strong south-west wind. Tho ball was dry and the game was open, both set of backs operating at-
tractively. From half-way a fast rush by the reds, in which M. Sangster, Ross, Richards and Davey took part, the latter followed up fast when Richards kicked over the line, and scored well out. Ross failed with tho kick. Stratford 3, Patea 0. The Stratford backs in several
rushes gained much ground, and were assisted by the forwards, who hustled the visiting backs. A free kick to Patea gave them only brief relief as a passing run to within side the blue 25 put them on the defence again, and later they were compelled to force. The visitors had a turn at attack, durin which Edwards made two unsuccessful “pots” at goal. Stratford forced twice following hard kicking. From a line out near the line, Young went over to score, and Ross with a splendidly judged kick the ball high up between the posts. Stratford 8, Patea 0. I
The ball was heeled smartly by the blue forwards on the line and Zimmerman heat his man but was downed. Play went to Patea’s line in a combined back and forward rush. Again the blues rallied. They invaded the red quarters and Stratford was forced with a long kick. Headed by Fastier, the red forwards rushed to the 25. and C. Sangster dummied near the line and got across. Ross again kicked successfully. Stratford 13, Patea 0. During the spell Couch re tired and McPike filled the vacancy.
C. Sangster beat the. opposition round the scrum in Patea's 25, and scored. Ross missed goaiing. Stratford 16, Patea 0. From inside halfway M. Sangster made an opening and passed to I). Collins, who ran down and gave a nice long pass to Ross who outpaced the opposition to score in a handy position. Ross missed with his kick Stratford 19, Patea 0.
From a scrum on the Stratford lint the blues were driven back to halfway. Zimmerman broke away in the open, hut was slow with his pass and was downed. There as a spell of play in neutral territory. In Patca’s 25, C. Sangster secured from a scrum and passed to Richards who battled across the line. C. Sangster’s kick failed. Stratford 22, Patea 0. C. Sangster, Butcher and M. Sangster handled in Patea’s 25, and the latter scored between the posts. Ross goaled. Stratford 27, Patea 0. C. Sangster beat everything at half-way, slowed down when he readied the fullback, passing to Butcher, to Fastier, who was pulled down near the line. Clarke ran away solo to tho fullback and lost possession, but Smith picked up and scored between the posts. Ross’s kick hit the post. Stratford 30, Patea 0. Latham scored in a fast follow-up, bustling the fullback for possession. Ross failed to ’goal. Stratford 33, Patea 0. Ml' G. Were refereed.
