Mr Trevor A. Jarvie, Universal Film representative, arrived in Hawera today. The death occurred at Hawera on Friday of Mrs L. Gascoigne, of Rotokare Hoad, Eltham. The funeral toon place at Fltham to-day. Mr and Mrs W. Illston, of Ilunterville, are week-end guests of Mr and Mrs E. Buekrell, Whakamara. Mr and Mrs R. Milne Allan, formerly of Wanganui, have taken up their residence in Hawera, Mr Milne Allan having joined the llawcra staff of Messrs Johnston and Co., Ltd. The first man to enlist in Hawera at the outbreak of war in 1914, Mr Neil Boomer, the well-known middle-weight boxer of that time, arrived in Hawera on a visit by the train from Auckland this morning. Mr Boomer enlisted on August 6 and went to Samoa with the first expeditionary force, landing on the island on August 29. After two months he returned to New Zealand and assisted in the formation of a Veterinary Corps at Upper Hutt. Finally, he obtained Ills discharge and went to Australia, where he joined up with the Australian Light Horse, being later wounded at Gallipoli, and subsequently in desert fighting in Palestine. He returned to Australia with three years’ service to his credit, and now farms GOO acres near Wagga, New South Wales. Mr Boomer is staying at the Commercial Hotel.

Mr John Paynter, a well-known citizen of Hastings, died on Thursday morning at the age of 91 years. The late Mr Paynter was born at New Plymouth in 18-14, and was one of the oldest surviving settlers born in New Zealand. He spent his early days in the Taranaki district and fought throughout the Maori wars which were waged in that province. When only 10 years of age he was in charge oi ammunition wagons which were drawn by bullocks. While a comparatively young man he moved to the Nelson district, where he took up farming, which he. relinquished' on going, to Hastings about 26 years ago. He was champion shot of New Zealand, and twice won the Ballinger Belt. He leaves the following family of six sons and four daughters: Messrs Ralph Paynter (Hastings), Horace Paynter (Hastings), Alfred Paynter (Nelson), Albert Paynter (Christchurch), Leonard Paynter (Auckland), William (Paynter (Blenheim), Mrs A. Malcolm (Richmond), Airs P. Malcolm (Richmond), Airs J. D. Smith (Lower Hutt), and Aliss R. Paynter (Feilding). The late Air Paynter was an uncle of Air C. A. Wilkinson, ALP. for Egmont. The funeral took place at 2 p.m. to-day at the Havelock North cemetery.
