ANNUAL EIGHT GAR EVENT. TWO BOATS SWAMPED. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) DUNEDIN, April 20. The New Zealand eight-oar championship race, rowed on Dunedin Harbour this morning, resulted as follows: Wanganui 1, Otago 2, Auckland 3, East Coast 4, Southland 5. The Wellington and Canterbury boats were swamped. Some thousands watched the a-ace. The water conditions were good except for a jobble off Wavcrley caused by the south-westly breeze. The race was Won by two lengths, with 10 lengths between second and third, and one and a quarter lengths between third and fourth. Southland stopped rowing before reaching the finishing line, and Canterbury and Wellington were swamped three-quar-ters of a. mile from home.

After much jockeying at the start the seven crews were dispatched in good line. Within a few minutes the superior combinations began to show out. Wanganui, Otago and Wellington were out in front after half a mile, and then Wanganui assumed control and went away as they pleased. After opening out about two lengths they that lead, rowing easily all the way. Otago made valiant efforts to reduce the lead, but they were not a match for the leaders, who were a picture on the water. The other competitors were bunched some Jengths behind, and, coming through a choppy stretch of water, Canterbury and Wellington were swamped. Auckland then rowed into third position, heading East Coast and Southland to ,the line. No official time was taken ; owing to the swampings, but it. was approximately 19) minutes.
