Fifteen runners faced the starter in the Eltham Handicap, and of these Electric Bell, the ultimate winner, was the best backed, although there was a good deal of support forthcoming for Plutus, who was never prominent at any stage, and finished seevnth. Great Vanity and TeCla began but passing the stand the first time Juggler had gone to the front, and led Great Vanity, Tecla, King’s Guide, Paulino Dillon and Guy Zolock in that order, with the remainder strung out. Going into the back stretch Juggler was still in charge, the order fiehind him being Great Vanity, Tecla, Guy Zolock and Pauline Dillon, With kalf-a-mile to go, Tecla ran into second place, and Electric Bell made a move on the outside, running into fifth position. At the straight entrance, Juggler still led, with Happi in close attendance, he having come in a burst of speed from near the rear. Tecla, Guy Zolock and Great Vanity were not far away and "when the I field straightened up Electric Bell made a fast finishing run on the outside to

prevail in the finish by two clear lengths from Guy Zoloek, who finished very strongly down the straight to beat Juggler for second place. Then came Silver Black, Happi, Native Cole and Plutus.

Modern Lady was backed down to a short price in the Manaia Handicap, Sandy N. being the only other runner to be backed to any considerable extent. The favourite failed over the last hundred yards and had to fill third place. Earl Bingen began best and going put of the straight the first time led from. Header, Survivor, Modern Lady and Sandy N. Going down the back Modern Lady ran past Survivor and at the half-mile post was in third position behind Earl Bingen and Header. Those following were Survivor, Sandy N., Mabel Chimes and Fleet Arrow in that order. Modern Lady had taken the lead when the field passed the. stand at the end of the first round, and was closely attended by Earl Bingen and Header, with a dozen lengths’ gap to the next bunch. Half a mile from home Modern Lady, Sandy N., Earl Bingen and Header were together well out in front of the remainder of the field. The same order was maintained into the straight, the gap to the rest of the field having extended. Sandy N. took command half-way down the straight and prevailed to win by half a length from Earl Bingen, with Modern Lady a similar distance back in third place. Then came Header, with Survivor and Mabel Chimes a long way back.

Times: 2,52 2-5, 2.50 3-5, 2.51. (Winner trained by owner, Rangiora.)

The Donald bracket, 'Blondie—-Red Gold, was backed as though the Normauby Handicap was over, but the public were well out in their judgment, for Blondie could do no better than finish in third place, behind Harvest In and Bolinda King. Gold Seam began, in- his usual manner, and hit oat for the front as soon as the word "go” was given. Red Gold, Bolinda King, Orleigh Mills and'Blondie followed him in that order to the turn. Going into the back stretch Harvest In ran up into second place, Red Gold, Bolinda King, Nelson’s Chum and Blondie being the order behind him, with the others well back, and appearing to liave little or no chance of being iji at the death. Half a mile from Home Red. Gold had hit the front, Gold Seam, Harvest In, Bolinda King, Orloigii Mills, Nelson’s Chum and Winshow being the order behind him, with Blondie making a fast run oh the outer. Entering the straight the order of the leaders was the same, but Blondic had run up into fourth place. When the field straightened up Bolinda King started out after the leaders, but he could not catch Harvest In in the run home, and the latter won by a length. Bolinda King had a similar distance to spare-from Blondie. Orleigh Mills-was fourth, and then came "Winshow, Red Gold, Nelson’s Chum and Gold Seam, with Iron Man a long way back last. Blondie had every chance, but could not stay with the other two down the straight. Gold Seam was never a possibility after the half-mile peg had been passed on the run home. Bolinda King ran well, and should win shortly. PRESIDENT’S HANDICAP (Harness), of 115 sovs., second horse 20 sovs, third horse 10 sovs. One mile and aquartcr. 2.50 class. 2- ARISTOTLE: .Mr A. Chinnery’s b g, aged (Guy Parrish—Penelope) limit (R, Motz) - 1 3- PRONTO BINGEN: Mr R. D. Kenfierley’s br g, aged (Pedro Pronto—Rhine) 12 yds bhd (J. KCnnerley) •••■••••• 2 4- SMOOGER: Mr A. Won by half a length, two lengths separating, second and third. Times: 2.48, 2.47 1-5, 2.45 3-5. (Winner trained by R. Motz, Now Brighton.) The last race of the day, the President’s Handicap, was a good betting ■race, despite the fact that there were

only five starters. Public opinion was divided fairly evenly between-Aris-totle and Edna Worthy, one being favourite on one machine and one on the other. Edna Worthy began best and passing the stand was leading from Pronto Bingen, Aristotle; Harold Denver and Sntooger in that order, there being no change going down the back stretch. Five furlongs from home the field closed up a bit, and Sntooger im- - proved his position slightly. With half a mile to go Edna Worthy, Pronto. = Bingen, Aristotle aitd Sntooger were grouped in that order, Harold Denver being well back. Entering thci straight Pronto Bingen took charge, .leading from Aristotle and Smooger, with Edna dropping back. In the run to the judge Aristotle got home by half a length, with Pronto Bingen two lengths clear of Smooger. Harold Denver was fourth and Edna Worthy last. The I&stnarned made practically all the run- - ning, blit faded away a furlong or so - from home.
