New Australian Schedule Embodying 119 Reductions

A tariff schedule embodying S 6 reductions under the British preferential rate and 33 under tho general rate was tabled in. the House ox Representatives and becomes effective to-day. The most striking variation affects motor body panels. The tariff on completed bodies is unaltered, but a body imported in panel sections for assembly locally can now be lahaed for £3 15s, compared with £32 10s formerly. Other items on which the tariff is reduced include apparel, socks and stockings, agricultural machinery, machine tools and textiles. „ :.-A ... . The Minister of Customs said the Government’s tariff policy would definitely reduce production and living costs without detrimentally affecting employment. None of the new duties was below the level which exhaustive inquiry by the Tariff Board had shown to be adequate to protect industries and to make for greatest efficiency.
