BOWLING REVIEW

SOUTH TARANAKI CLUBS CONTEST FOR SYME SHIELD PLAY AT PARK GREEN. Although the season is well advanced, there still remain a number of important fixtures among South Taranaki bowling clubs as the following notifications will disclose: Saturday, March , 30. —Syme Shield contest 'at Park, commencing at 9 a.m.; also a one-day tournament at Opunake. Wednesday, April 3.—Opunake oflicial closing day. . Saturday, April G. —Five rinks from Kaponga Visit the Hawera Club. Tuesday, April 9.—Entries for tho South Taranaki Easter tournament close. „ . Friday, April 19. —Opening ot the South Taranaki Easter tournament. Syme Shield.

This competition in previous years has been held on New Y’car s Day, but this year tho day was not suitable and the committee in control has arranged to hold the fixture on the Park green to-morrow, the first round commencing at 9 a.m. Four rinks from each club in tho southern division, namely, Park, Hawera, Patea and Manaia, will play for the shield, which is at present held by the Park club. lin past years most of the contests have been close, and it will bo interesting to sec if the Park club will again come through without a loss. The club was the divisional winner for the Taranaki Shield, but the Patea club has been playing good bowls this season and Manaia, strengthened by McDonald, the divisional singles champion, is expected to make a good showing. The Park green has been declared by visitors to be the best green in Taranaki this season, so the representatives taking part are assured of a good day’s outing. Opunake Club. This club has announced Wednesday, April 3, as its official closing day and in the evening the club is holding a smoke concert in St. Patrick’s Hall. President P. Dalrymple has been another popular “chief,” and the club may look back upon a very successful season. All uowlers are invited to both functions. South Auckland Tourists.

Another Waikato “raid” was made on Taranaki last week when a party consisting of 53 “warriors” and 22 “wahines” landed, appropriately enough, in front of the T’uri Memorial at Patea. It was a thoughtful gesture on the part of the Patea club to provide morning tea fol* the whole party and to have the Mayor of the town extend a civic welcome. Rangitira I*. Rowe headed,, the raid and from all accounts the party is enjoying its tour. On the bowling side, its strength is not strong, but this may generally be expected from a- touring party iyho come for the enjoyment of the game./

A Marker’s Duties. It is not generally known that- the Rules and Regulations governing markers as set down by the New Zealand Bowling Association comprise, inter alia, the following: “(7) 2<rtcr each bowl is played indicate to the player in question by the usual signs known among bowlers, bow many shots he is up or down, indicating ill tlie popular manner, if in doubt. To avoid confusion, only give the sign to the player who is then on the mat.” , , . It behoves all bowlers who are taking part in competitions to pay attention! to the rules ,so that any little unpleasant misunderstandings which, might arise through ignorance, may be avoided. . . ’ , . Another point under singles play not generally known is that the competitor has no right to make a measure himself. Under Rule 10 he may request tlie marker to measure, but lie (tho player) may not perform the operation himself. , .. „ , Throwing tho jack aeter tlie first head is another rule not generally interpreted. Rule 41 states that if_it (the jack) “be thrown less than 66 feet from the front of the 1 mat, II SHALL 810 RETURNED.’' The opposing player has no right to request that it- be moved back the two feet or so which it is short of the minimum length. . Regarding the rule relating to a jack coming to rest- outside the rink .boundary—the present rule says that it must be returned. An amendment to this rule it is understood, has now been made whereby the jack may be straightened, but as the amendment Tias not yet been promulgated, the old rule is still in force.

Syme Shield Rinks. Kinks to tal\o part in to-morrow’s Syme Shield contest have been notified as follow: Hawera. —Hobbs, Rudge, AVinks, Bull- Bayley, Clarke, Adamson, Murray •/Colclough, Bardsley, Canning, M. J. Squire; Edwards, Spratt, Robb, Maslin.
