BOXING AT HAWERA

JARVIS—HAWES RETURN ROUT.

CONTEST NEXT WEDNESDAY.

Exceptionally keen interest is being centred in the professional boxing contest between Jack Jarvis (Elthani) and Percy Hawes (Christchurch) to be staged at Hawera next Wednesday night. Heavy bookings have already been received from all parts of the province.

When the gong brought to a close one of the finest bouts ever staged in Taranaki at New Plymouth a fortnight ago, all eyes centred on the referee. Who had won, Jarvis or Hawes? Then came the decision—a. draw—which was given a great reception. But afterwards followed a buzz of conversation in which everyone voiced their opinions. It is safe to .say that had a. vote been taken among the spectators the decision would ' have been still unchanged . On the other hand each of the contestants considered himself unlucky hot to secure the referee’s nod, and was firmly convinced -that another match would clinch, his argument. A return bout was inevitable, and in securing it for next Wednesday night the Hawera Boxing Association has been particularly fortunate, for another thrilling contest will assuredly eventuate. ' Following are the records of these two men :

Jack Jarvis : Thirty wins in 38 contests. Won 14 contests in succession last year, mostly by knock-out. Run-ner-up New Zealand lightweight title. Feather champion Taranaki, 1933, lightweight 1934. Last year almost without exception met provincial champions over whom won, knocking out South Auckland champion at New Plymouth, and Smith, Auckland champion and scientific medal holder of that province (first round). Beat Val Borcovsky, the tough Blenheim boxer, and knocked out Gordon, Patea, holder of New Zealand title, in a round. Beat Stock, Hawke’s Bay’s rugged featherweight, on points at Hawera. Lost decision at New Zealand championships to Hogg, to whom weight, height and roach was conceded. Gave the crowd a great thrill when lie had Hogg out on his foot in the second round and the hell saved him.

Percy Hawes : Won the Canterbury featherweight championship 1930-31-32. Won the' New Zealand amateur championship at New Plymouth, 1932.
