TRADE WITH JAVA

OPENING FOR NEW ZEALAND A VISITOR’S^IMPRESSIONS (By Zelegrapti—Press Association.) AUCKLAND, March 27. The fact that -Australia and South Africa have appointed trade commissioners in Batavia (Java) was mentioned by Mr C. Westerman, shipping manager of Maclaine, Watson and Co., Batavia, a passenger by the Wanganella on his way to San Francisco.

Mr Westerman said that Javanese trade was now largely in the 'hands of Chinese who were apt to do business with the countries that came on the field first.

“My own- view,” he said, “is that there is a market in Java, for meat, butter, cheese and tinned fruit from New Zealand but the Dominion will have to go after the business.” Mr Westerman said that much of the business with Europe and Australia today was done by frequent air services, which had largely wiped out the cable business.
