A first offending inebriate, arrested in High Street, Hawera, was convicted and discharged by Mr E. Dixon, J.P., at the Hawera Courthouse this morn-
“I have seen the beauties ojf Canada, but I can assure you it is my conviction that in New Zealand we have something superior to anything. the American Continent has to offer,” said Mr J. W. Coilms, New Zealand Trade Commissioner for Canada, in an address to members of the Auckland Manufacturers' Association. Mr Collins, who has been on four months’ official furlough in the Dominion, has travelled extensively in both Canada and the United States as well as in New Zealand.
A farmer attended the February meeting of the Matamatn county Council to ask for the withdrawal of a prosecution under the Noxious Weeds Act. The farmer outlined work done, and declared that he did not want to appear in Court, because his name would be published in the newspapers. A fine did not ivony him. It was decided to explain to the farmer .'that council/ could not withdraw a summons at the present stage.
“Many markets abroad recognise quality rather than price, and some amazingly satisfactory results have already been achieved vy Dominion manufacturers who have had long vision,” said Mr J. W. Collins, New Zealand Trade Commissioner for Canada, at a luncheon given by the Auckland Manufacturers’ Association, xxe said he had learned that Aucklandmade sporting goods were selling in South Africa, baking powder and canned fruits in Jamaica, and floor rugs in Australia and Canada, while toheroa soup was for sale on markets throughout the world.
A remarkable record for longevity is enjoyed by the relations of Mr George Pearce, of Auckland, who on Friday, celebrated his ninetieth birthday. He was born on March 23, 1845, at Hilperton Marsh, Wiltshire, and was one of a family of 12, of whom eight are still living. The eldest is 92 and the youngest 73 years of age. Mr Pearce’s parents • died at the ages of 92 and 94. Those of the family" still living are Mrs H. Osborne (Rhode Island, U.S.A.), 92 years of age; Mr G. Pearce (Mount Eden road, Auckland), 90; Mrs D. Thorpe (Rhode Island), 89; Mr u. Pearce (Trentham), 87; Mrs R. Heywood (London), 82; Mrs S. Walton (Wiltshire), 79; Mrs E. Bolwell (Burnham-on-Sea, England), 75; and Mrs A. Ponting (Trenf>ham), 73. Their combined ages total 667 years.
