TRACK AND STABLE CHAT

(By "Childers”)

RACING FIXTURES (In New Zealand.) March 8, 9 —Cromwell J.C. March 9—.-Napier Park R.C. March 9, 11—Waikato K.C. March 16—Kurow J.C. March 16—Clifden K.C. March 16, IS-*-01iinemuri J.C. March 16, IS—Wellington K.C. March 20 —Opotiki J.C. March 21, 23—Oamaru J.C. March 22, 23 Manawatu K.C. March 23, 25—Bay of Plenty J.C. March 30—Hawke’s Bay J.C. March 30 —Birchwood H.C. Bacchus Marsh Will Improve. A promising hack seen out at Bulls Was Bacchus Marsh, who finished very fast into second place behind Bold Jim. Although a six-year-old, Bacchus Marsh has done very little racing and he should improve. He is a son of Acre and Tiger Lil and is trained at Awapuni by Mrs A. Y. McDonald. Reserved for Trentham. A northern report states that Gay Sheik is. unlikely to start at Te Rapa to-day, but will probably fulfil his Trentham engagements. Impaste Reappears. Impaste is down to make his first appearance since returning from Australia at the Ohinemuri meeting next week. He will be opposed by some first-class gallopers in the St. Patrick’s Handicap of six furlongs, but nevertheless his Sydney form was good and the High Art gelding should more than hold his own. Will Tie in Demand. Beau Gallanted failure at Te Aroha •will not be greatly heeded by his host of admirers in the Wellington district and there is little doubt that he •will be sent out favourite in the Tinahori Hack at Trentham next Saturday. He is a really classy hack and has a fine record at Trentham. A Likely Tilly. • There was a fair amount of support forthcoming for Sweet Music at Bulls and that it was not misplaced, the Awapuni filly showed by running a very solid second to Darecourt. In the latter, she was meeting a smart galloper so her effort was a good one and she should not be hard to place in a similar type of race very shortly. Sweet Music is bred the right way being by digger Minstrel out of that useful mare Kilmiss, by Kilboy out of Marty. Dark Marble Appeals. With 10.0, Dark Marble does not appear to be overweighted in the hurdle event at Ohinemuri next week, for his recent form has been first-class. He ft followed up a second to ! St. Clara in *«- the Stratford Hack Plate by winning the hurdle race at Matamata decisively and followed this up by leading the field home in a highweight at Botorua. Ar, Te Aroha he ran second to On Approval in the Champion Hack Cup on the opening day and was unlucky not to be in a place on the second day. Legatee Fit.

Legatee and Severe galloped smartly at Awapuni early in the week and both arc reported to be in fine trim for their approaching engagements at Trentham. Good though he undoubtedly is, Legatee will be fully tested at Trentham next Saturday, for he is opposed by some high-class youngsters in Gay Sheik, Heritage, Ilororata and company. Death of Promising Youngster. 1

The Kiccarton owner-trainer, J. H. Prosser suffered a severe loss on Tuesday. His two-year-old gelding by Robespierre from Half-a-Braee, dam of Double Shot, was given half-pace work for a circuit and when taken into his stall fell to the ground. He rose again,

but after a little struggle expired. He w-was a most promising youngster and A his owner could have obtained a good price for him if he had shown any inclination to sell. It is just close on two jcais ago ■when Prosser lost another likelj colt, the three-year-old Scarlet Bobe, who dropped dead when racing at the Canterbury Jockey Club’s autumn meeting.

A “Mudlark” Prospect. Should a heavy fall of rain happen to soak the Trentham track a day or so prior to the meeting, Miss H’ushabye will have to be taken into consideration for the Thompson Handicap. Certainly she has defeated very little of note in her recent starts, but the manner in which she won was attractive. It will be remembered that another of Manchineel’s progeny in Nukumai was a wonderful performer at, Trentham, while Miss Husliabyo won the Douro Cup with ridiculous ease at her only start on the course. i An Improved Hack. By winning the Onewhero Hack Cup on the first day at- Pukekohe and running second in the Kawakawa Cup on the second day, Barn Dance registeied two of his best efforts to date. The son of Spcardancc is one of the most improved hacks seen out this season, and trie best has not yet been seen of , him. He is a bold galloper, possessing more staying ability than the majority of hacks, and a good future should be in store for him. Barn Dance is not engaged on the first day of the Waikato meeting, but is entered for the Hack Cup, one mile and a-quarter on the second day. If started he will have plenty of supporters. Finished on Solidly. Chidden atoned for some of her past disappointments on Saturday when she j won the Terawera Highweight Handi-, cap at Banks Peninsula: She was not hurried in the early part, but she was j always going well, while she came ■ home in solid style. G. Murray Ayns-, ley has always had a high opinion ofj Chidden, a sister to Chide, who was a good horse when he won the Hew Zealand Cup, Canterbury Cup and Stead Cup. The filly stayed a mile well on Saturday and now looks as if she would run on much further. She was capably handled by D. O’Connor, who has a great record in highweight events. 1 Should Pay His Way. ' Considering' It was his first race for a couple of seasons, Grand Tdnic did well to finish third in the Kaikohe maiden event at the Bay of Islands meeting. Ho began quickly and was up with the leaders at the home turn, when his condition gave out and ho weakened over the final stages. Grand Tonic is a powcrfullv-built gelding with a nice smooth style of galloping, who should pay his way on the country circuit. Otaki Improvements. Improvements to the Otaki Maori ■Racing Club’s course are ‘in progress, some twelve men being engaged on the work, which, when completed, it is Hoped', will result in one of the best tracks in the Dominion. In the past it was not in the best order, but in a few weeks’ time should have a sward of grass that will be pleasing not only, to horseowners and trainers, but to the public generally. Some 800 yards of the best soil has already been spread on the track, holes and hollows having been filled in and levelled off to the correct height. At present the course has been treated from the five furlong post to the mile peg, aiul the remainder of the work is expected to be completed in record time. Horseowners and trainers will appreciate the efforts of the club, and the course should be in tip-top order for the meeting to be held on June 2 and 4. Failed to Stay. In some quarters Timorous is fancied as a decided possibility for the Champion Hack Cup at Trentham, but on her form at Bulls her ' prospects seem remote, for having her first trial over a distance she failed completely to stay. Over sprint courses Timorous is undoubtedly smart, and if confined to seven furlongs and lesser distances she should be capable of paying her way.
