DOG TRIALS AT ELTHAM
MAIN EVENT DECIDED. WORK OF HIGH STANDARD. The Eltham-Takou sheep dog trials were continued yesterday. The main event, the open head, bring back, drive through one set of hurdles and drive to pen and yard, went to Mr A. Do ole’s Boy, with Mr W. V. Mclntyre’s Cruehan second. Excellent entries were received for the trials, the total number of starters being 138. The competitors came from as far as Awakino and Wanganui. Of the starters 30 were in the maiden, 35 in the long head, 40 in the head and yard and 33 in the huntaway. The attendance on Thursday, 11 people’s day,” was well maintained, and keen interest was taken in the runs. Some of the work was excellent, but many dogs experienced difficulty in yarding, and quite a few failed entirely in this respect. The work in the long head generally was good and was much above the level of previous years. The huntaway work was of a high standard, and many dogs put their sheep up the hill in good style.
