Wellington Detectives Each Awarded £SO Damages ARTICLE IN SUNDAY PAPER OFFICERS’ ONEROUS DUTIES ißy Teleirrapn— Frees Association.) WELLINGTON, To-day. A sum of £SO was awarded to each of four Wellington detectives by Mr Stilwell,. S.M., as damages in thenlibel action against the New Zealand Sunday News. The plaintiffs were Detective-Sergeant W. Trieklebank and Detectives F. Hayhurst, F. N. Robinson, and W. R. Murray. The article was published on January 19. Inter alia, Mr Stilwell said that the rank of detective involved onerous and exacting duties and a high standard, of conduct expected of one engaged mainly in the detection of crime, --e must rely very materially on the cooperation and assistance of the community in his inquiries. He became well-known by reason of his activities and any unjustifiable attack on his reputation, code of conduct and ability and discharge of office exposed him to hatred and contempt and gradually imperilled his efficiency and undermined his mana as a police officer. Costs in each case amounted to £6 13s. —i ! " L r
