John- Bainbridge, aged 24, an infantryman, was sentenced to deatn on a charge of murdering Edward Hedman, aged 75. Bainbridge attended ;a New Year’s Eve party at his fiancee’s home and played a game called “Murder.” He drew the ace of spades and acted the part of the murderer. Bainbridge did not show agitation and participated in the fun.

The Crown alleged that a few hours before the party, Bainbridge murdered Hedman, whose head was battered and whose throat was cut, and robbed him of £36 to buy an engagement ring.
